Squirrels run along the top rail of this fence to get to the stalls where they clean up grain dropped by the horses. Even though they usually prefer mice, rats, and birds and eggs, this rat snake is hoping for a squirrel for breakfast.
He is hiding in plain sight right next to the big steel barrel where the horses grain is kept. He is still lying here, even though I surprised him because he is digesting a rat that he caught. The big bulges in his middle tell me he has eaten recently and he is too heavy to run away quickly, so he decided to just stay quiet. I am pretty sure the bulges are a rat because there are rat turds on top of the feed barrel. This type of rat snake is beneficial, but I will catch him and move him far away from my barn.
